Membership

Under the Memorandum and Articles of Association, personal membership is open to persons employed in the profession of librarianship (including library assistants) while personal membership is open to those with an interest in the work, progress and welfare of libraries but who are not employed in the profession. Libraries and other corporate bodies may join as Institutional Members.

Membership of the Association includes the following benefits:

  • Copy of the Association journal, An Leabharlann ( published twice a year)
  • Leabharlann-e – A monthly electronic LAI newsletter
  • Opportunity to apply for Associateship of the LAI (ALAI)
  • Opportunities to join groups and sections within the LAI, to attend seminars and conferences and to meet and network with colleagues.
  • A countdown discount card which entitles members to discounts at bookshops and other outlets

Membership rates are set by the Annual General Meeting and only members in good standing are entitled to vote, act as Committee members, and receive An Leabharlann.

Membership renewal notices are sent out every January and members who have not renewed within a specified times are deemed to be lapsed. A listing of members is published before the AGM each year.

ASSOCIATESHIP (A.L.A.I. (Associate of the Library Association of Ireland)) A scheme of Associateship was instituted in 1989 to give recognition to the professional status of librarianship. Associateship is open to those members who hold a recognised professional qualification and who meet other criteria as laid down by the LAI.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIP The Executive Board has the power to award Honorary Life Membership to members whose contribution to the Association and the Profession is considered to be outstanding. Honorary Fellowship of the Association may also be awarded
