Joint Christmas Networking Evening
to be held in the Royal Irish Academy
on Thursday, 2nd December 2010.
We are delighted to announce that our guest speaker is

The Joint Committees will host a Drinks Reception from 6pm.
The aim of our Informal Networking Evenings is to provide members with the opportunity to meet other librarians and information professionals, and to share news, views and experiences.

Our Guest Speaker was Fiona Ross, Director of the National Library, who delivered a very lively and engaging talk.
The A&SL Committee hosted a reception at 6pm.

We visited the RCPI Library at 6 p.m. Thank you to the librarian, Robert Mills, for a tour of the college and for showing his beautiful library to us.

A&SL/SILS UCD Careers Breakfast Seminar
As part of Library Ireland Week 2010 we hosted the 4th Careers Breakfast Seminar for students in UCD’s School of Information and Library Studies. This seminar provided a forum for experienced professional librarians to share their career paths to date with students and offer guidance on job seeking to upcoming graduates.

E-MAGINATION: Sourcing, Evaluating & Delivering Electronic Information Resources

The seminar included two key speakers:

and Arlene Healy, Trinity College Dublin;
and also featured case studies from academic and special libraries in Ireland:
Marie O’Neill from Dublin Business School
Niamh O’Sullivan from the Irish Blood Transfusion Board
Pauline Murray of NUI Maynooth
Kevin Hawkins from the Digital Humanities Observatory
The speakers provided participants with hands-on practical guidance on collection development, dealing with suppliers, legal pitfalls and how to incorporate access to freely available online resources with your subscription based content. During the day we explored current issues in the electronic resource landscape and pointed to future trends in the acquisition, management, evaluation and delivery of content to our end-users. Practitioners discussed the promotion of resources and statistics management, open access and the current state of consortial buying in Ireland. The case studies explored various themes: dealing with subscription agents, negotiating licenses, developing eBook collections, digital repositories and the discovery and promotion of free resources and tools.
